Trump Wants To Cut $50 Million From Great Lakes Funding To Pay For Mexico Wall
President Donald Trump plans to cut an additional $50 million from 2017's Great Lakes cleanup funding to help pay for a wall that will block illegal immigrants from entering the U.S.
According to the Trump administration $18 billion will be invested into the wall in which $50 million will be coming from cuts from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The cuts were proposed this week by the White House according to Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
Along with a $50 million cut to the GLRI, Congress also has plans to cut $1.5 billion in community development block grants, $1.2 billion which was set aside for research grants for the National Institutes of Health, and $30 million from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Sea Grant program.
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is a state and local project to help keep the Great Lakes clean by combating invasive species, keeping the lakes pollution free, and building green infrastructure.
