Opening Date Revealed: Former Genesee County Kmart Getting A New Bargain Store

There’s something kind of satisfying about seeing an old, empty big box store get a second life. And that’s exactly what’s happening at the former Kmart in Clio.

Former Clio Kmart Gets New Life as Genesee County's Second Ollie's Bargain Outlet

A new Ollie’s Bargain Outlet is coming to the old Kmart building at 4290 W. Vienna Road in Vienna Township. The Kmart closed its doors back in December 2019, and like so many former Kmart locations around Mid-Michigan, the building sat waiting for its next chapter.

Well, now we know a little more about what that next chapter looks like. Ollie’s says its new store in Clio is currently being prepared for a grand opening on November 4, 2026. A customer service representative confirmed Wednesday that the company’s store team is still working on the final details for the opening festivities. The project is being handled by Saginaw-based Wolgast Corporation, according to the Vienna Township building administrator.

What Else Is In Clio's Former Kmart Location?

The old Kmart building has actually been divided into multiple sections. Family Farm & Home opened in part of the building in March 2025 after purchasing the property through an auction. There’s also a vacant section in the middle of the building, while Ollie’s will occupy another portion of the former store.

And if you’ve never been inside an Ollie’s, this is definitely a bargain hunter kind of place. The company describes itself as America’s largest retailer of closeout merchandise and excess inventory, and you never quite know what you’re going to find.

What Will Ollie’s Sell?

The stores carry everything from books and toys to furniture, appliances, clothing, food, luggage, sporting goods, cooking supplies and seasonal merchandise.

This will be the second Ollie’s location in Genesee County, joining the store on Miller Road in Flint Township according to MLive. So after nearly seven years of sitting mostly empty, that old Kmart in Clio is getting another shot at life. And for people who love digging through a store looking for a good bargain, November 4 could be a pretty interesting day.
