After growing up in the Lapeer area, I can tell you I've stopped at Slaterville Market on Imlay City Road more times than I can count. Whether it was grabbing a six-pack, picking up a few things, or getting a pizza, it was just one of those places that always seemed to be there.

Sadly, Slaterville took a serious hit after a fire broke out late Wednesday night.

According to ABC 12, the call came in around 10:30 p.m. after someone passing by noticed what appeared to be an electrical issue involving a transformer near the market on Imlay City Road. While crews were on the way, dispatch started getting reports that the market itself was on fire.

By the time crews arrived, flames were already showing from the structure.

Slaterville Market Sustains Significant Fire Damage

Firefighters were able to get inside the building at first, but that didn't last long. As the fire grew, parts of the roof collapsed, making it way too dangerous for crews to stay inside.

Making matters worse, there aren't many (if any) nearby fire hydrants in the area. Departments from across Lapeer County had to haul water to the scene while crews worked to keep the fire under control.

After about two hours, firefighters finally got things under control around 12:30 a.m.

Future of Slaterville Market Remains Unclear After Fire

No injuries were reported, which is obviously the good news here.

As for the building, well, that's the bad news. Officials say it sustained significant fire and structural damage. Based on the damage, it's hard to imagine there's much of the building left to save.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
