Michigan Mobile Home Parks Could See Biggest Rule Change in Nearly 40 Years
Owning your home should give you a little peace of mind. But when you own a mobile home and somebody else owns the land underneath it, things can get complicated pretty fast.
You’re still paying lot rent, dealing with park management, and hoping problems actually get fixed.
Now, Michigan could change the rules to give residents a little more protection and make park owners actually deal with problems.
What Could Change at Michigan Mobile Home Parks?
The bills would require parks to be inspected every year and crack down on owners overcharging residents for utilities. Owners would also have to give residents a year’s notice before making them leave to use the property for something else.

And if the owner decides to sell, residents would get a chance to come together and negotiate buying the park themselves. Imagine having a say in what happens to your own neighborhood.
Swartz Creek Resident Pushes for Mobile Home Park Changes
Flint Senator John Cherry led the effort, and someone right here in Genesee County helped make the case for it.
According to Michigan Advance, Swartz Creek Estates resident and advocate Holly Hook told lawmakers about discolored drinking water she’s seen and stories she’s heard about sewage running through yards.
People shouldn’t have to deal with that just to have an affordable place to live.
Are Michigan’s Mobile Home Park Rules Changing Yet?

Not yet. The bills passed the Senate on May 19, but they’re still waiting in the House Government Operations Committee.
So, nothing has changed just yet. Hopefully, this goes somewhere, because safe water and getting problems fixed shouldn’t be too much to ask.
