Every once in a while, you'll pull up next to someone at a red light and notice they're wearing headphones or earbuds while driving.

It got me wondering: Is that actually legal in Michigan, or could you get pulled over for it?

To be fair, traffic laws seem to change all the time, so I figured it was worth looking into.

Surprisingly, the answer is no.

Michigan doesn't currently have a law that specifically bans drivers from wearing headphones or earbuds while driving. So if you're wearing AirPods behind the wheel, you're probably not getting a ticket just for that.

Why Michigan Drivers Should Think Twice About Wearing Headphones

Just because it's legal doesn't mean it's a great idea.

The Michigan State Police's traffic safety guidance specifically advises drivers to avoid using headphones or earbuds behind the wheel. The concern is simple: they can make it harder to hear emergency sirens, car horns, railroad crossings, and other important sounds around you.

Can You Get Pulled Over for Wearing Headphones While Driving in Michigan?

Just because it's legal doesn't mean you're completely in the clear.

If wearing headphones causes you to drive carelessly, miss a siren, or contribute to an accident, police could still pull you over and cite you for unsafe driving.

In other words, the headphones probably won't be the reason for the ticket, but what happens because you're wearing them might be.

I don't know how people do it. I wear headphones at the gym or on a plane, but that's about it.

I like knowing what's going on around me at all times, whether I'm walking through a store, out in my neighborhood, or driving down the road. If I've got music blasting in my ears, I feel like I'm missing too much.

Obviously, plenty of people disagree, but at least now we know that wearing headphones while driving isn't currently against the law in Michigan.
